May 2025 Writing Prompts! [Short Stories]

Okay okay okay… this is my first ever writing prompts post and I am SO excited about it. I’ve been dreaming of sharing my prompts for a long time, and it feels so surreal to finally be doing it.

This May, I’m aiming to write 5 short stories, and these are the prompts I’ve chosen to challenge and inspire me this month:

  1. "You can't bring a dragon into the city!" "Too late. She's here."
I saw a weird cloud formation the other day that seriously looked like a dragon swooping over a skyline, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. So naturally... chaos and dragons in the city it is.

  2. Neon lights flickered as she realized her memory had been hacked.
I’m most excited to write this one because I loooove cyberpunk so much. Like, give me rain, neon signs, and existential dread any day.

  3. An overwhelming sorrow whenever their eyes meet.
This one’s sadly inspired by a friend’s very unfortunate (and very dramatic) talking stage that ended in total emotional ruin. Tragedy makes great fiction, right?

  4. Feeling invisible at your own birthday party.
What better way to process your past teenage woes than to write them out?

  5. Fear of someone watching you, even when you're alone.
Thriller isn’t usually my strong suit, but I want to push myself out of my comfort zone a little this month.

Bonus!! 🎉
If you want to join in on the fun, I’ve compiled a full list of 30 writing prompts for May—one for each day! I did my best to include a fun variety of genres and prompt styles, and you can get it HERE.

Please, please feel free to share your stories with me as I would truly love to read them. I really hope you enjoy this little collection and that it brings a spark of inspiration to your day.

Happy writing!
